Within the scope of the SIROMA Operation funded by the European Union and the Republic of Turkey, International Roma Day (8 April) and Hıdırellez were celebrated on May 5, Thursday at Özgecan Barış Meydanı (Peace Square).
Almost 1000 people attended to the Event of International Roma Day which was conducted to introduce Roma culture, raise awareness of Roma people, strengthen the cooperation among Roma citizens and increase public awareness of Roma culture.
The opening speeches were delivered by the representatives of the Beneficiary Ministries. Representatives of relevant institutions and organizations also attended to the event, namely; Mersin Deputy Governor Cemal YILDIZER, Sector Manager of the European Union Delegation to Turkey Mehmet Caner DEMİR, Vice President of the Mediterranean Municipality Bedrettin GÜNDEŞ, Project Coordinator of Tarsus Municipality Ahmet ATA, and President of the Mediterranean Roman Federation Ali DAYLAM.
Director of the Radio Patrin Orhan GALJUS from the Netherlands as a role model of a director, Management Consultant Dehran BİSLİM from Hungary, International Relations Expert Mojgan ZARGAR from Iran and Halil İbrahim NURBEL from Turkey as role model of teacher delivered their speeches and shared their personal and national experiences.
The representatives from Mersin Provincial Directorate of Public Health set a stand and blood pressure and blood glucose measurement of people were carried out at the stand. In the activity area, oral and dental screenings were conducted for the willing attendees in a Mobile Oral and Dental Health Vehicle, and dental care kits were disseminated to citizens as promotional materials.
70 students in the 10th and 11th grade from Mersin Sabiha Çiftçi, Atatürk, Çamlıbel, and Nevit Kodallı Vocational and Technical High Schools paid a visit to the High Technology Centre, the Faculty of Fine Arts, the Conservatory, and the Academy of Physical Education and Sports of the Mersin University. The students are informed by the University’s professors. The students curiously listened to the presentations made by the representatives of the University’s career centre. At the end of the visit, the students watched the football tournament and had a lunch in the university cafeteria.
Children enjoyed the painting and sand painting activities in the event area. They also watched dance and theatre performances.
The winning team of the football tournament was awarded with a Cup.
International Roma Day Event in Mersin was concluded with firework show and the concert of Kobra Murat.
